Class will include creative problem solving in illustration and design concepts (grid/scale/color/layout), integration of illustration and design, typography, layout, use of AIGA design methods, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign lab time, resource list for illustration/design/blogs, and letterpress

Boxcar Letterpress field trip (date/time TBD) – discussion of letterpress history, modern approach, file prep, and more)

Week 1 – 1/14:

Review syllabus, materials/media and discuss 
Handout 1st assignment
self brand ID and stationery system: using hand skills, Adobe Illustrator and use of a printer (bridging illustration and design)
(handout final project)
calendar – simple cover page or belly band with title/year/visual – 4 panels utilizing 3 months each – choose from 4 themes/concepts (cities of the world/flora/endangered species/mid century modern furniture using hand skills, Adobe Illustrator and use of a printer (option to print one panel letterpress via Boxcar – overview of letterpress file setup)

Week 2 – 1/21:

Class review of pencil/Adobe Illustrator concept board sketches for 1st assignment
(self brand ID and stationery system bridging illustration and design)

Week 3 – 1/28:
COMPS DUE
One-on-one review of 1st assignment/lab time
(self brand ID and stationery system)

IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT:
– exercise cropping 1 ligature where the viewer can tell which letter form is shown but not in a literal way (practice for brand ID/shape/type/form/art direction) and 2 animals – students will need to supply formal prints via the computer

Week 4 – 2/4:
Critique 1st assignment
(self brand ID and stationery system)
Handout 2nd assignment
packaging – we will work on soap packaging using basic real rectangle bars of soap – we will illustrate and design 3 labels that are cohesive in one soap brand line using hand skills, Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop and use of a printer

Week 5 – 2/11:

Review rough sketches for 2nd handout/lab time

IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT:
– exercise in collage and taking the collage apart

Week 6 – 2/18: 

Review 2nd assignment work in progress/lab time
COMPS DUE as Adobe Illustrator print outs (design and illustration boards)

IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT:
– exercise in flow/concept/consistency – accordion fold – 10 panels of xeroxed imagery that all needs to flow one into the other – blk/wht copy machine 10×10 sq mounted on chipboard and connected with artist tape on backside/inside (I can show you an example of one I made)

Week 7 – 2/25:

Critique 2nd assignment 
Handout Final Project
